Making Use of Space Marine Heads

Posted by Bitzbox

If you've visited the website frequently or ever looked to buy Space Marine Tactical parts you may notice that I have a huge surplus of space marine heads. This photos shows Head B and C from last week, before the recent restock. There's about 700 head B and over 100 head C roughly in this photo.

Space Marine Heads

I finally came up with an idea about how I can put them to good use: An Aegis Defense Line. The original idea was to make an Aegis Defense line for my Chaos Space Marines that consists of piles of dead Space Marines. The small parts of the aegis would be piles of space marine heads and spikes. I made a little tutorial showing how I made them.

First draw around a space piece of Aegis onto a piece of thick card

... and cut it out

Take some space marine heads and cut off the neck joints

Start gluing them to the card facing random directions to form your aegis shape

Continue to pile them up to a height you are happy with

You may wish to add a few heads inside behind the pile also

Lastly I took this symbol from the Chaos Space Marine Defile and cut the spikes off

then just add the spikes where you like. It's as easy as that!

Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight: Part 4

Posted by Bitzbox

My Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight is now complete! Here he is in all his glory. I was going to add a tabard to him but it just didn't look right so I kept him without one. The base has a rusty space marine dreadnought on it just so it doesn't look too plain. I hope you guys like it.

Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight: Part 3

Posted by Bitzbox

I have now painted the torso for my Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight. I am very proud of this piece and how it's came out. I started by using the same palette of colours I used on the arms but thought it needed something different. That's when I decided to go for a chequered pattern on the front of the torso. I haven't painted this type of pattern before I started this model but I have found it quite enjoyable. Of course the diamonds in the pattern are not all the exact same size. That would have taken a lot more work and skill than I can muster but I'm still delighted with the results.

For the aerials at the back I wanted to add some different colours to the palette. At first I went for a straight pink but it looked to bright so I switched to a gradient pattern from purple. I copied this with the green below which I think came out really well.

Now that the body is complete (apart from the shoulder mounted guns which will be added at a future date) I decided to attach the arms and the head.

Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight: Part 2

Posted by Bitzbox

I am painting my Harlequin Wraithknight in several stages. I have started with the head and the arms. I couldn't resist painting the head and I'm so happy with how it came out. I really had no plans for a colour scheme for this model so just went with a few colours that I enjoyed using and I think they have worked pretty well together.

Harlequin Wraithknight Arms and Head

The blade of the sword was airbrushed by Aiden who is a guest poster on this blog.

The lower parts of the arms have a chequered  pattern. I aim to have more chequered patterns throughout the rest of the model. The helmet plume and scatter shield use he same four colours

So that's what I have painted so far. Next up will be the torso which I have already began working on. All going well I will be able to display it before the end of the week.

Eldar Harlequin Wraithknight: Part 1

Posted by Bitzbox

I have never had any desire to collect Eldar, and nor do I still however the Wraithknight model is just amazing and after seeing it at my FLGS I knew I had to own one. As it's not part of an army and just a one off purchase for me I wanted to do something special with it. Originally I thought about making a diorama with it but then I had the brainwave of making a harlequin style one. I began by getting one of the old harlequin jetbike fronts with the face on it and creating a mold with Instant Mold. I then used green stuff to create the face and wrap it around the head. Some GS work was still required but the basic shape was still there.

I wanted to create a more dynamic pose which wasn't too difficult with this model. His right leg was cut in half in the shin with the lower part of the leg switched around in order to be able to pose the leg bent in this way. I thought a sword would fit in more with the harlequin theme. The pose below is only blu tacked into place as I wish to paint him in different stages.

The feedback I have received so far from Facebook suggests he needs ribbons and tabards etc. which I will certainly add to him. Most of which may be created separately and added on after he's painted.

Scrap Challenge: A Duel

Posted by Bitzbox

Over the weekend I sponsored and took part in (just for fun) a scrap challenge event at my friendly local game store, Boundless Realms. This was hopefully the first of many Bitzbox sponsored events at the store and it was very enjoyable. The theme for this Scrap Challenge was to create a Duel. If you're not familiar with how a scrap challenge work you basically have a load of random bits in the middle of the table and you have to use bits to make a conversation based on a specific theme. I took several photos on the day, including all the participants entries which were all amazing.

The first batch of participants hard at work

Just look at the concentration on those faces

Two of the store owners and myself judged the competition but we couldn't help having a go ourselves. Below are our entries.

My very basic attempt has an Orc stabbing an Ogre through the neck

A duel doesn't always have to be a fight, how about some checkers?

An Wizard with a wooden horse riding a Skink vs an Orc also riding on a skink... yep

And now onto everyone else's entries:

2013-06-09 20.09.57 2013-06-09 19.19.29 2013-06-09 18.34.26 2013-06-09 18.34.03 2013-06-09 18.17.28 2013-06-09 18.17.04 2013-06-09 17.46.19

All of which are excellent duels as I'm sure you would agree. After much deliberation we narrowed it down to a final three. In third place was this 'duel' which consists of three space marines playing Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Rock, Paper, Scissors. Unfortunately no Lizard or Spock

Now we move onto the final two. I don't know how long we were mulling over who should win out of these. It felt like days but in reality it was probably 15 minutes. It was close and the store owners were kind enough to give a second place prize as it was so close. So in second place we have this one. I love the poses of the guys on the base.

w

There of course could only be one winner and I think this one deserved it. I really like how the assault marine is jumping down towards the Ork. The Ork himself is also really awesome and looks boss with a Chaos Lord lightning claw.

Just Some Tau

Posted by Bitzbox

I've had these sitting around for a few days now but my first few Tau models are complete. I have so far built and painted 6 Firewarriors and a Crisis Suit. I've started to get better at painting white and started to get it looking smoother than when I first tried it. I decided to use a black background in my light box for taking photos so they stand out better. I think a Riptide may be next on my shopping list. That model is too beautiful not to be in this army.
